MORE TO BE THANKFUL FOR ON THANKSGIVING.....
Here it is Thanksgiving morn, and I sit perched 20ft up this massive oak tree, overlooking a huge hayfield. Last time here, I had watched a bigboy in the distance lurking with a doe, then hear a buck grunting in the ticket to my right. Everything I tried failed to bring him out for a shot.

Again this morning, we arrived 30 minutes late. It was good shooting light by the time I settled back against that treetrunk, rifle across my lap. It is cooler this morning...low 30's. The easy wind has a northerly bite to it. Not bad, just enough to make me want to pull my collar up around my neck a little tighter....

I had not been sitting there long when a blur of movement caught my eye off in that distant field. Distant, being about 900yds. There it was again, in the hazy morning light, I could barely make out the form of deer. I reach into my vest pocket and pull out my dainty little bushnell binocs...ahhh. would you look at that?!! What is going on? I counted them...three big racked bucks...all chasing does...round and round...up to the woods edge, back out into the open cut field of corn, across the hayfield...round and round,,,,up to the fencerow and back out...Good Golleeee. three big ones...and those chasing them?...must be smaller bucks...in this light it is hard to tell.

I sit awed by this site as did two or three other does, that the bucks weren't interested in, as they stood off to the sidelines. I watched this circus of deer till my blood was pounding in my veins....I just wanted to get closer to the "action". Not that it would do me any good, unless, they jumped that fence and came onto the property I was hunting.

Still watching the game of "tag", my ears are tuned to my immediate surrondings...I hear it...I turn slowly to my right...there she is....a doe...tiptoeing toward me, barely tussling the crisp leaves...looking behind her, I watch for a companion...Crash!!!! I quickly turn to my left...

Out of that thickest cover from the other side of the hayfield, bound another doe!...She was as sleek as a bullet shot straight...she raced toward my woods....moments later...moments I used to raise my 30/30 to firing postion and rest my shooting arm against the treetrunk,.... out bound the buck....he too was stretching his legs to their fartherest point....determined to catch his prize....

I saw antlers, didn't take time to count, just silently begged for him to stop or at least slow down. Crashhhhhhh....out bound another deer...a smaller rack, 4pts....straight for that buck, right on his heels....awesome! I followed the first in the scope, laid down the hammer of my 30/30 just as he stopped atop a mound in the hayfield. "I know this is the bigger of the two, just ease down that trigger." I whispered to myself. Boom!.. He bucked, he bolted, and he crashed not more than 60 feet from point of impact. heartshot. I let out my breath, as I saw he wasn't going anywhere.

Meanwhile the doe raced in a large circle, the second buck closing in on her....down under hubby's tree...he never got off a shot. And later, he told me, a third buck emerged, a spike and joined the chase. I never saw that last one..because.......

I sat back against the treetrunk and looked at the distant field...dang deer, still chasing...but it is down to one buck and one doe...coming this way...yes!!! jump that fence....come on.....yeahhhhhhh. Over she bound... I glassed her, and watched her move up the field toward me...meanwhile the big boy is coming on. He jumps the fence and follows her, yet keeps his distance...no big hurry here....hmmmm.

I glass him...what a big rack...ahhhh possible ten or better...and look...here comes another...a smaller one jumping that same place in the fence. Man what a feeling....here I was with a buck on the ground and only allowed one buck per day with a total of 3 for the season. On they came, she would walk about 50 feet and stop and look all alert...the big boy followed suit. still keeping his distance...Maybe they would circle me, and give hubby a shot....hmmmm.

I sat from 7am to 8am and could stand it no longer...down I climbed and went to retrieve my trophy. Maybe tomorrow morning, they will treat us again...hmmmm

Yes he is a trophy, even with a broken eyespike and main beam, he has led a rough life. He still is a nice tall 6pt. And a trophy still in my eyes. One to always remind me of the best dang deer hunting morning yet....Thanksgiving '99.

Well Both 1999 Season and 2000 Season are Over and Done.

Well 2000 season is behind me and I don't have any major updating to do to this site. Well at least not in new photos of monster bucks. But I did revamp the place for the new century.

I didn't tag out the monster that I was hoping for. I did have an enjoyable season though. I hunted harder and more than I have in the past ten years only to tag one doe and one button buck, mistaken as a young doe.

I invited a few friends to camp for a hunt. Dennis and Lakeland Charlie of Tndeer.com enjoyed hunting the cornfields during muzzleload season. FiestyRedHead, also of tndeer, spent the day hunting with me in the same cornfields. None of my guests tagged out, but I do think the hunts were enjoyed by all. I know I enjoyed having them and it put a bright spot in my otherwise dreary season.

All in all, it was a season, that ended a horrific year in my life. I watched my only brother being eaten alive by two kinds of cancer. He was my Hero, of sorts, in that he, of all people, could make me laugh when I was sad. He kept his sense of humor up to the end. I was the last one to have a decent conversation with him and watched as he drifted off into a eternal peace. His light now shines above me every where I go.

Other misfortunes in my life kept me downhearted most of the year. It started in Jan. with my heart problems and went down hill from there. Things like our shop, built by ourselves 14yrs ago, burnt to the ground. This was right before deer season started, and we were rebuilding during much of the season. There was three months filled with death after death of loved ones... Hubby's brother, just days after mine died. Grover at DeerCamp entered eternal peace the following week. I lost two cousins, that were brothers and an aunt all within three months. It was almost more than I could bear. But through the grace of God, I have survived another season and into another year.

Happy New Year, 2001~

I look forward to this fall and a new hunting season. Since I didn't tag out a buck, and hubby only got a six pointer, I know there is a MONSTER awaiting opening day of season 2000!

. Happy Hunting, Everyone!.
